Scudieri, Abraxas and La Fratta Estates

The Abraxas Winery in Pantelleria and Tenuta La Fratta in Val di Chiana represent the agricultural heritage of Tenute Scudieri.

In fact, starting in 2020, the Scudieri family decided to invest in the world of wine, hospitality and, more generally, in the agricultural sector. Achille Scudieri, Paolo's eldest son, who leads the Adler Hp Pelzer Group, a family business that operates in the automotive sector, founded by his father in 1956, is personally responsible for the activities. Today, the company, based in Ottaviano, in the province of Naples, is an international group with 104 factories in 23 countries around the world.

ABRAXAS

The Pantelleria winery, founded in the 1990s, was acquired by the Scudieri group in 2020. Abraxas, whose production is entrusted to the oenologist Riccardo Cotarella, boasts expanses of bush-trained vineyards overlooking the coast, cultivated according to an ancient Phoenician tradition, the so-called "heroic agriculture", recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The strong wind, the unfavorable climate and the low rainfall have not stopped the inhabitants of the island who, with tenacity, have adopted a technique of short pruning and cultivation in "basins", such as to make the vine strong and healthy.

The Abraxas winery is the highest on the island and is located at about 600 meters above sea level, on the slopes of Montagna Grande and built according to the ancient Pantelleria winemaking tradition. In the approximately 40 hectares of vineyards, which represent the largest surface area among the wineries of Pantelleria, there is space for native and non-native vines distributed at different altitudes: from the Zibibbo vineyard (or Moscato d'Alessandria) located in Bukkuram, a stone's throw from the sea and in the part of the island that overlooks Africa, up to the heights of Vipera and Randazzo.

In Bukkuram, the Zibibbo vine is grown using the classic Pantelleria sapling technique. On the heights of Vipera and Randazzo, at about 600 meters above sea level, where the winery is located, vines with a great history are grown, which find their exaltation on the slopes of Montagna Grande that slope down towards the sea: Nero d'AvoIa, Nerello Mascalese, Syrah, Cabernet Frank, Grenache, Carignano, Malbec, Mondeuse, Petit Manseng, Gros Manseng, Merlot and Viognier. From the cultivation of the vines to the winemaking and bottling: the entire process takes place on the island of Pantelleria. Particular care is dedicated to the production of the Doc Passito di Pantelleria, using the most traditional techniques, in compliance with the rules set out in the specification, including the use of drying racks, placed in the open air and equipped with covering systems to be activated only in case of rain or unfavorable weather conditions. The high quality of the dried grapes is a fundamental prerequisite for obtaining a good Passito di Pantelleria with the Doc brand.

THE GRAVE

La Fratta, in Val di Chiana, in the province of Siena, was acquired by the Scudieri family in 2022. It is an estate with very ancient origins, the genealogy of the Chianina breed was born in this company, so much so that the first certain news reported dates back to 1208. A document, the lstrumento de die 8. Idus Decembris 1208: «[…] the Sienese finding themselves in financial straits… imposed on Fratta that it contribute ten lire». The village was then expanded and saw its current conformation in 1500.

Its history, with its traditions and customs, has been handed down over the centuries, and to this day its identity has remained as authentic as it was then. The ancient farm structures have recently been renovated into rooms and apartments for an increasingly demanding international clientele in search of beauty. La Fratta stands on what was one of the most important roads of ancient Rome: the consular road Cassia and, more precisely, halfway between the Mansio Manliana and ad Mensulas. In a map from the early eighteenth century it is noted that the access road to the farm still followed the ancient Roman road.
